The 5 most powerful game engines of all time

27 09 2009

Game Engines are constantly evolving and changing to adapt to the current hardware and push them to the limits. These game engines have proven to show off the greatest graphically impressive games of the generation.

5) Unreal engine 3: Probably the most popular and most used game engine of the generation. It is featured in many games on all platforms. Its renderer supports many advanced techniques including HDRR, per-pixel lighting, and dynamic shadows, and builds upon the tools available in previous versions of the engine.

4) EGO Engine: This engine is featured as one of the best looking and most powerful multi-platform racing game engine ever created. It shows off some of the most impressive racing graphics, lighting, and motion blur across three platforms, running at a stable frame rate.

3) Killzone 2 Deferred Rendering engine: Deferred Rendering has proven to work very well with the Playstation 3 and Killzone 2. It allows the usage of a large amount of dynamic lights and reduces the complexity of required shader instructions allowing the system to have more resources for textures, AI and Effects. The results are the best looking first person shooter on the Playstation 3.

2) Naughty Dog Game Engine 2.0: Not much is known about this game engine, except that it will be used in Uncharted 2 which is currently one of the best looking games ever, and easily is the best looking on any console to this date.

1) CryEngine 2: To this day the CryEngine shows off the most impressive visuals in any game, in both Crysis and Crysis: Warhead. Showing off impressive detail such as Light Beams & Shafts, Eye Adaptation & High Dynamic Range (HDR) Lighting, Motion Blur & Depth of Field, and Dynamic Soft Shadows. CryEngine 3 will be making its way to consoles bringing most of this technology with it.

Why you should not buy a PS3

26 09 2009

Hello people, the, Why you should not buy a (insert game, console, or accessory here) series continues with the PS3.

This series is dedicated to showing the public the down sides of everything, because nothing is perfect! So here is why you should not buy a PS3

Playstation network: PSN has evolved to be a great service utilizing many features that are used to connect gamers to each other. However PSN is lacking many features that the competition has, such as Cross-Game Voice chat and Custom music in all games.  The friends list is also more limiting, providing much less information than it should. The customization of your profile is also limited to just Pre-made avatars.

Multi-Platform games: This is not so much of a problem as it was before, but it is still a noticeable issue. Multiplatform games on the Playstation 3 still do not meet the quality of multiplatform games on the Xbox 360 and the PC, suffering from weaker graphics, frame rate, and loading times. As it stands now, the difference is minimal, but still noticeable.

Backwards compatibility: Should you go out and buy a Playstation 3 right now, unless bought used, yours would not have Backwards compatibility. This is a major let down for Playstation 2 owners who plan on upgrading, being unable to play PS2 games on the PS3 forces you to have both consoles. This feature is in all other consoles, so it makes you wonder why it’s not in the PS3.

“It’s not cool to own one:” The PS3 has got a lot of hate in the gaming industry for some unknown reason. It gets so much hate simply for being an overly Bad Ass console for the media to handle. Its just not considered cool to own a PS3 in this day and age.

There you have it, why you should not buy an PS3. Come back later this week for the next part of the Why you should not buy series featuring a Gaming PC the PSP and DS.

Also be sure to check back for Who should buy a Wii/Xbox 360/PS3 later this week.

Note: This is not a hate article, it is simply based on opinion and recommendation. We are doing this for every console and every game, if you like the ideas of the PS3 then go and buy one, I never said you shouldn’t, only telling you what problems you will run into.

Why you should not buy an Xbox 360

25 09 2009

Hello people, the, Why you should not buy a (insert game, console, or accessory here) series continues with the Xbox 360.

This series is dedicated to showing the public the down sides of everything, because nothing is perfect! So here is why you should not buy an Xbox 360

Price point: Sure the system starts at $199 with the high-end model being $299, being the cheapest console on the market as it stands, it sounds like a great offer, right? Wrong, Microsoft only gives you the console, and the bare minimal on what you need to operate it, the rest is pure Accessories that cost a lot extra. Want wireless? That will set you back $100 right there. Xbox live also costs a yearly fee of $50, for service that only slightly beats out the competition.

Technical problems: From launch the Xbox 360 was plagued with technical problems and too this day none have been fixed and are still widespread. These problems include Overheating (Red Ring of Death), Disk Scratching, and many more. With a failure rate of over 30% this will quickly turn people away if it weren’t for the three-year warrantee.

Exclusive Games: At the start the Xbox had a great exclusive line up with several new IP’s joining in, now in 2009 the Xbox has seen very few exclusive game releases, with the top rated one for 2009 being a Halo sequel. Not to say Halo is bad or anything, it alone is worth getting an Xbox over, but there is a serious lack of titles coming for the Xbox in 2009 and 2010.

Kids: The Xbox 360 and Xbox live are very popular services for children. Many of the users on there are children and all they care about is cussing and making you just plain pissed off. Most Xbox games such as Halo almost always have children in it cussing when people kill them, this is not so much of a problem for PC and PS3 gamers.

There you have it, why you should not buy an Xbox 360. Come back later tonight for the next part of the Why you should not buy series featuring the PS3.

Also be sure to check back for Why you should buy a Xbox 360 later this week.

Note: This is not a hate article, it is simply based on opinion and recommendation. We are doing this for every console and every game, if you like the ideas of the Xbox 360 then go and buy one, I never said you shouldn’t, only telling you what problems you will run into.

Why you should not buy a Wii

25 09 2009

Hello people, as a way to re-launch the blog I am putting together a short series, Why you shouldn’t buy a (insert game, console, or accessory here) This will be a post that happens every other day, with the first few days being every day, I am kicking off the series with the Wii.

So here is why you should not buy a Wii

Games: Lets face it, the Wii started off great with lots of fun games that people loved because they were a fresh take on gaming but now they are getting old and boring. Most games that come out for the Wii are just a bunch of mini games that have you do random things such as bake a cake or hit a baseball. While fun at first these games get boring and old very fast. The few AAA games that come out on the Wii are not abundant enough to justify the $250 price tag it currently has.

Control: The console is motion only, except if you have a game cube controller. Assuming you bought the Wii for the motion controls then you are likely not going to be using the GC controller. The motion controls can feel limiting and inaccurate at times. The controls also limit the Wii on what type of games it can feature, with good FPS games being very rare. This also applies for racing games and role playing games.

Online play: The Wii lacks a strong online system. With almost no way to get connected with your friends on the few games that support the Wii network. Connecting with your friends is very tough, if not impossible.

Graphics: From a graphical stand point, the Wii is way behind the competition. The Wii is lacking in HD support and the strong processor and graphics card in the current systems. This prevents games from outputting “photo realistic” graphics that match the current expectations of the modern gamer.

There you have it, why you should not buy a Wii.

Come back later tonight for the next part of the Why you should not buy series featuring the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Also be sure to check back for Why you should buy a Wii later this week.

Note: This is not a hate article, it is simply based on opinion and recommendation. We are doing this for every console and every game, if you like the ideas of the Wii then go and buy one, I never said you shouldn’t, only telling you what problems you will run into.
