PS3 firmware 2.7 rumors, and why they might be fake

19 02 2009

Recently a blog named ‘PS3 Trophy Guides’ has reported rumors of firmware 2.7 and what features it includes. While a lot of people would get excited, including me, if its all true, odds are its not, and here are my reasons behind it.

Friends List:
– Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.

    –A highly wanted feature, but more likely being saved for firmware 3.o

– Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.

    –I think this is something they could add, but where? under the name there is already the game they are playing, and generally the games use up the 2 lines available. I’m going to say the odds of this being true is a possibility.
In-Game XMB:

– Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seemless in-game experience.

    –Sony keeps optimizing the XMB, but it would take a lot of work to get it to be a drastic improvement. I’m willing to bet that the improvement won’t be as massive as it is set out to be.

– “Theme settings” options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.

    –A possibility, but a more pointless feature that Sony just ‘might’ add.

– Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.

    –This is what kills it for me, this is where i decided it has to be fake. Something such as an in game web browser is a huge feature, but one of those features that is to good to be true. There are a few main problems with this, the main one being RAM. The PS3 doesn’t have a lot of ram to start with, only 256mb, which almost all the newer games use most, if not all of it. Even without running the game, loading a big video or flash object can freeze up the system. Now if Sony can have the browser use almost no ram, than its a possibility.

    Now you might be saying, “Some PS3 games already have an In-game web browser” while that statement is true, its not the point. Those games set the browser to a website that is designed to be easy on ram, and limited to that one website. They also put the browser to points of the game where not a lot, if not nothing, is going on, making it really easy on the ram. There is very low chance this feature will never see the light of day, at least on the PS3.

– Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.

    –If there going to implant voice in this firmware, why not make it in game? great feature, but more of a 3.0 feature.

Another thing to note:

– Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background

    –In the patch notes the word acquired is spelled wrong.

You can view the full rumored 2.7 firmware details here:

Friends List:
– Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
– Home Integration: Saved Playstation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
– Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.

Gamer Card & Trophies:
– Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
– Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting “Recent Trophy History” option.
– Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
– Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.

In-Game XMB:
– Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seemless in-game experience.
– “Theme settings” options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
– Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
– Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
– Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.

Misc:
– Other slight UI tweaks and enhancements.

your right on web browser. you see that could have been thrown in there just to do it. also he says release date q2 09. that starts from april to june. right now from my sources they have said fw 3.00 arriving around june 3rd. i actually do believe this stuff except browser. not all of it has to be true. also notice the wording of the article. very professionally done, not made up

What is with this “save it for 3.0” excuse? Don’t you remember that FW 2.0 was rubbish compared to FW 2.4? Sony has said quite a few times that the digits don’t matter in terms of feature amount…

In-game browser isn’t THAT unlikely. Like you said, some games already have it. Perhaps its use is limited to one tab open at a time, and no flash content? Hell, it could even mean that its like the in-game music, where a developer can choose to allow it or not, who knows.

As for the displaying the players trophy count/level, Eric (FW update guy) has said that they are going to try to have a way to display a users basic info without having to go to the gamercard. This feature is likely, since it fits with their plans.

BTW, themes for the in-game XMB are possibly, one of the PSN theme designers has said before that there isn’t really anything stopping them from having your custom XMB theme also displayed in-game… so thats also very likely and in line with what they’ve talked about before.

All sounds too good to be true, but its certainly nothing ‘impossible’ or ‘random’, all seems pretty on course IMO. Not saying its true, not saying its false, I hope it is true, but ill take the info with a grain of salt.

But seriously, IMO your reasons are kinda bogus bro. :\

I think that when the In game INternet thing was said it was meant as when you pause the game or when a game stops while ur in the XMB can use the internet BUT it will automatically quit when your about to play again. I don’t think that it will use the RAM if it does that.

Agreed lol.
But what if the game automatically pauses? Then would you be able to use a web-browser?

I just knocked the update because they used the term Gamer Card (a Microsoft product).

The browser thing though is possible, they could just disable Flash and have the browser run using less resources, I still doubt it only because they use the proprietary NetFront for the browser.

If Sony used something like Google Chrome (or the WebKit engine in general), then this would be more than very possible.

@harrykid32

The problem with a game automatically pausing is, it needs to resume again, meaning all the stuff that was in the ram, will still be in the ram, unless you want to go through a loading screen.

great post. i agree. while i’d love to see these features, i don’t think we will until 3.0.

whoever wrote this obviously doesnt know sonys update workings. when in game xmb was still a dream a lot of people thought it was for the big 2.0 update, but a sony representative said the number of the update has no importance so 2.7 and 3.0 is the same thing to sony. so 2.7 could be a major update while 3.0 could just fix some background stuff. its all the same to sony and the ps3 so while i agree with some of the article, continually saying “it will be saved for 3.0” is completely void and not a valid point. the other points are just not the number of the update bc once again, the number has little to no importance.

I’m not sure why everyone thinks that all major updates have to be released at 2.0 or 3.0. Sony has released the anticipated Trophy update with firmware 2.40. I think we’ll see these updates soon, but not at 3.0.

Ok for who ever said that the Internet Browser is not Possible, remeber FW 2.0, yeah. Sony added the ability for games to use the HDD as virtual memory. Therefore the ps3 is not longer limited to those main and video rams, but it can now use more to execute the Browser. Although the virtual ram is not as good as the physical ram it is a possibility.

in game browser is possiable.
my old PC has a 1.8 dual core running 256MB of RAM.
running windows vista ultimate (wich has a recomended RAM setting of 4GB).
and we all know how RAM demanding vista is, i can have up to 4 tabs open in E7 at the same time without slow down.
so if my shitty comp running windows vista ultimate can do it,
than the ps3, with a os that requires a lot less, hardware wise has alot more can do it no problem.

To the Author, I think you should check your facts my friend the PS3 has 512mb of RAM…

Memory:

* 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
* 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

256+256 = 512MB

I don’t know how you are allowed to continue writing?

The Internet browser bit killed it for me too, the only way it could happen is that flash and maybe images are disabled. I would love to have the other new features though

Very true

For me, the In-Game browser feature is really something hard to believe in. And yes, the RAM is the biggest issue here. “Boobie” said he can run IE 7 with 3 tabs on a 256MB system with Windows Vista. Now try to run a PS3-quality game on your system and IE 7 and your 3 tabs at the same time. Things get different now. Yes, the PS3 could use virtual memory (HDD) for the browser, but that would hardly be a fast solution, specially with the default 5400RPM HDD that comes with the PS3. Personally, i would use In-Game Browsing for nothing, but some people would like to pause their game and go to a walkthrough site to know what steps to take next. Sircoynie says that the PS3 has 512MB of ram, but half of that goes to video memory, and apparently on PS3 you can’t sum those memories up like you could on Xbox 360. And about the “leave to 3.0” thing, I personally think it’s not true, but it could be based on how PSP updates work, because on PSP they leave the new big features to those “.0” updates.

I believe that the PS3 can handle the in-game web browser because the PS3 has 8 different cell processors and thats just for the game so the PS3 isn’t using all its RAM because the game is being played using the cell processors. So which leaves most of the RAM for the Internet browser

@Idmpc

The PS3 already uses virtual memory for the PS3’s web browser. They added that in 2.4 I believe. That’s why people no longer get out of memory errors when running the PS3’s browser. On the down side it made the browser really slow.
